SEJ and The Uproot Project are partnering to offer diversity fellowships (worth up to $2800) to support journalists’ attendance at #SEJ2024 in Philadelphia. Applicants must be a member of (or join) SEJ, the Uproot Project or one of the affinity J-groups listed on the application form. Deadline was January 5, 2024.
International applicants: Invitation and participation letters cannot be issued to potential attendees until registration and full payment are made. Conference organizers are unable to send invitation letters directly to consulates on behalf of a potential attendee. Invitation letters are prepared solely for individuals and are emailed directly to them. It is the participant’s responsibility to ensure documentation is correct and completed in a timely manner before you start your journey. It is recommended that an application for a visa be made at least 10 weeks prior to the proposed travel dates. People visiting from Canada and from non-U.S. countries are required to have a valid passport and possibly other documentation. Contact your nearest embassy or consulate with any questions or concerns regarding your travel requirements.
SEJ members are welcome to bring a guest to the Saturday Dinner Party ($60) and/or Sunday Books & Authors program ($25). Email sej@sej.org to purchase their ticket(s). Guests attending only these ticketed events are required to complete this form in advance of the conference. SEJ member guests (1 spouse, partner, child or nonmember who qualifies for SEJ membership) who wish to attend the full conference (or a single day) can register using the regular registration form at the member rate. The SEJ member should contact sej@sej.org to request a discount code on behalf of their guest.
All registrations include most sessions; lunches (Friday, Saturday) and dinners (Wednesday opening reception, Thursday hospitality receptions); and all beverage breaks. Some events cost extra; all are clearly marked on the agenda descriptions. These include Wednesday workshops, Thursday tours, Saturday dinner and party, and Sunday breakfast program.
Those who wish to apply for membership must do so before registering and will also have to pay the discount fee for first-year membership:
Standard: $40 ($70 thereafter)
Low-to-Mid Income Countries per World Bank rankings.
Student: $25 ($40 thereafter)
Membership is open only to journalists, professors and students. Please review the Membership Eligibility Criteria before applying.
To ask questions about accessibility or request accommodations (e.g., mobility assistance, sign language interpreters, alternative formats), please email sej@sej.org. At least three weeks’ advance notice will help us to provide seamless access. We will be walking a couple of city blocks between sessions, so we recommend those needing mobility assistance stay at the Sheraton University City Hotel and book soon — rooms are going like hotcakes!
Please be aware that if you register after March 12, it’s likely that special-diet meals will not be available.
All catering is arranged in advance, with final catering numbers given to the hotel at least seven days before the event so the hotel can order the necessary food. We always order extra special-diet meals, but these are given out on a first-come first-served basis. If you have severe restrictions and are registering after March 12, please email sej@sej.org.
SEJ will make every effort to accommodate special dietary needs. However, we can’t guarantee that your needs will be met for every meal. Please approach all meals with your usual caution.
If you cancel your registration in writing to sej@sej.org by March 12, you’ll receive a full refund. After March 12, you’ll receive 50% back until March 18. No refunds after March 18 (unless COVID-related/within 10 days of the conference; see below). Nonattendance does not constitute cancellation. Substitutions may be made before March 18. Attendees who fail to abide by SEJ’s COVID-19 Protocols will not be eligible for a refund. If you receive a positive COVID-19 test within 10 days of the conference, you should not attend #SEJ2024 and a full refund will be provided. Please email sej@sej.org.
